About the game
The second generation moved the series to Johto and introduced changes that underpin every later battle system: a day-and-night cycle affecting encounters in the grass, Pokémon breeding at the Day Care, held items, and two new types, Dark and Steel. The Special stat was split into Special Attack and Special Defense, and Shiny Pokémon also made their debut. Ho-Oh appears on the cover of Pokémon Gold. After the Pokémon League is defeated, the entire Kanto region opens up, offering an unprecedented amount of content at the time.

A diagram, not a world map: distances are not to scale, there are no coastlines, and a route that bends in the game is a straight line here. The directions are accurate, though — every connection matches the game. The legend below the drawing explains each symbol.
