The eighth and final Gym Leader on the journey through Kanto, Giovanni defends the Earth Badge in Viridian City with Ground-type Pokémon. He is also the boss of Team Rocket, so the Badge battle can feel like the reckoning for the entire journey. Later in the series, he returns at the head of Team Rainbow Rocket in Alola: defeated in Kanto, but never truly willing to quit.
